Is it true that a silk pillowcase is better than a nightcap? Thorough comparison and commentary by nightcap developers!
Nightcaps have recently garnered attention as a hair care item. They've been a hot topic since around 2021, with the promise of hair care benefits by reducing friction between hair and bedding!
At the same time, we've increasingly seen concerns from nightcap users such as "my nightcap easily slips off" or "I find it hard to fall asleep because of the cap." As a result, silk pillowcases are gradually gaining popularity as an easier-to-use alternative to nightcaps.
Frankly, there's no definitive "better" option between a nightcap and a silk pillowcase; it simply depends on what suits each individual.
However, with more choices now available, for those of you wondering which one to pick, I, as a nightcap developer, will share key points to consider!
For higher hair care benefits, choose a nightcap.
For those who prefer minimal effort, choose a silk pillowcase.
If you'd like more detailed information, please continue reading as I will explain the differences in effectiveness between nightcaps and pillowcases in the following sections.
What does it mean to do hair care while sleeping?
Why exactly do we need nightcaps or silk pillowcases in the first place? The answer lies in "friction."

No matter how much hair care effort you put in before bed, your hair can still be dry or frizzy in the morning. This phenomenon, which happens every morning since birth, is so common that we don't even question it. But results always have reasons. Dryness and frizz, of course, have their reasons.
Bedding and hair come into contact, and with the weight of your head and tossing and turning, "friction" occurs. This continues throughout the night (on average about 7 hours!). This friction can cause the cuticles to open or peel, leading to moisture loss from within. As a result, hair can be dry in the morning, or have a rough texture due to opened cuticles.
Nightcaps and pillowcases are items designed to prevent this!

How do nightcaps and pillowcases differ in terms of effectiveness, ease of use, and price?

You've probably understood by now that it's beneficial to "reduce the continuous friction on your hair while you sleep." However, the mechanisms by which nightcaps and silk pillowcases reduce friction are actually different.
- Nightcap
Reduces friction with the pillow by gathering and covering the hair with a cap. - Silk Pillowcase
Reduces friction between hair and pillow by using a pillowcase fabric made of fine, soft, and static-free silk.
Since the mechanisms for reducing friction differ, the effects achieved also vary.
I've summarized the different effects you can expect from each in a table, covering aspects like friction, dryness, and skin benefits!
| Nightcap | Silk Pillowcase | |
| Ease of use |
Takes some time to get used to wearing. Some can slip off easily. 〇 |
Easy to attach to the pillow. Won't come off while sleeping. ◎ |
| Friction |
Covers and holds hair in place (as long as it doesn't slip off), so high effectiveness can be expected. ◎ |
Reduces friction compared to standard pillowcases. 〇 |
| Dryness |
Covers the head, protecting hair from air conditioner drafts and dry air. ◎ |
Cannot protect hair from drafts or dry air, but silk's moisture-regulating properties keep hair less dry compared to standard pillowcases. 〇 |
| Comfort |
May feel a bit tight, but keeps hair off the neck and shoulders. 〇 |
Smooth and pleasant to the touch, ensuring comfortable sleep. ◎ |
| Skin Benefits |
Prevents leave-in treatments from transferring to skin, which helps prevent skin irritation. 〇 |
Reduces friction between face and pillowcase, preventing irritation-induced skin problems and pillowcase crease marks. 〇 |
| Price | Relatively inexpensive | Larger fabric area, tends to be more expensive than nightcaps. |
Nightcaps: Recommended for these people & Not recommended for these people!
We've looked in detail at the differences between nightcaps and silk pillowcases. Now, let's summarize who nightcaps and silk pillowcases are recommended for, and who they are not recommended for.
Nightcaps are recommended for these people:
-
People who are reasonably dexterous with simple hair arrangements
→ Nightcaps aren't just for putting on; if you have long hair, it's important to tuck it into the cap following the natural flow of your hair. -
People who want to protect their hair not only from friction but also from dryness
→ Compared to nightcaps that completely cover the hair, pillowcases are less effective at preventing hair dryness. -
People who want to prevent leave-in treatments from transferring to their face
→ Since hair is tucked into the nightcap, leave-in treatments won't transfer to your face or neck! -
People who want to keep their hair gathered to prevent it from tangling around their neck and shoulders
→ Hair stays neatly inside the nightcap. -
People who want to try overnight hair care at a low cost
→ Nightcaps are generally more affordable and easier to acquire than pillowcases! You can even find them at 100-yen shops and 300-yen shops.
Nightcaps are not recommended for these people!
-
People who sweat a lot
→ If you sweat profusely while sleeping, your hair and scalp inside the nightcap can become damp, which can lead to skin irritation, bacterial growth, and also make your hair more prone to bedhead.

People with flat backs of their heads (flat head syndrome)
→ Regardless of the nightcap shape you choose, it's highly likely to slip off.
Please consider a pillowcase instead.
If you've read this far and feel that a nightcap is right for you, there are various types to choose from.
Please refer to the next article, which introduces recommended nightcaps based on hair type.

By the way, the nightcap I developed has elastic placed in a position that doesn't interfere with tossing and turning, so I'm confident it won't slip off easily!

Silk pillowcases: Recommended for these people & Not recommended for these people!
Next, let's talk about silk pillowcases.
Personally, I would recommend a silk pillowcase over a regular one, but let's compare it with a nightcap!
Silk pillowcases are recommended for these people!
-
People who get bored easily
→ A pillowcase is better suited for them than a nightcap, which requires an extra step every night, as it's easier to stick with. -
People who dislike tight sensations
→ Most nightcaps have a certain degree of snugness to prevent them from slipping off. If you crave freedom, a pillowcase is definitely the way to go! -
People who sweat a lot
→ Since nightcaps cover the head, many people find them particularly hot from spring to summer. If you switch between a nightcap in autumn/winter and a silk pillowcase in spring/summer, you can sleep comfortably all year round. -
People who are reluctant about the look of nightcaps, or men
→ Although the variety of nightcap designs has increased, most are still grandmotherly or girly, which many people find off-putting. A pillowcase allows you to easily incorporate it into your routine!
Additionally, silk pillowcases are recommended as gifts for housewarmings, or as a pair for wedding gifts.
Silk pillowcases are not recommended for these people!
-
People who toss and turn a lot
→ If your head falls off the pillow, naturally, the benefits cannot be expected. By the way, if you use both silk sheets and a silk pillowcase, the pillow will be slippery and your neck and head won't be stable, so I do not recommend it.
For those who toss and turn a lot, I recommend a pillowcase that is not 100% silk, but rather uses silk-cotton (a fabric blend of silk and cotton), or one with a non-slip cotton back.
The pillowcase I developed balances stable comfort and hair care benefits by incorporating cotton fabric in key areas!

Also, if you sleep in a place where air conditioning directly hits you, a dramatic improvement in hair dryness cannot be expected. You might consider blocking the airflow or introducing a humidifier.
Summary
As mentioned at the beginning, let's review once more.
For higher hair care benefits, choose a nightcap.
For those who prefer minimal effort, choose a silk pillowcase.
Furthermore, I recommend using a silk pillowcase in the hot summer and a nightcap in the dry winter!
By the way, the brand ITSUKI, which I operate, sells original nightcaps, as well as pillowcases made from silk-cotton, a blend of silk and cotton that is not too slippery and offers the best of both fabrics.
